Big Nights at LA's: Lexington Avenue, Hull's 90s Clubland

Ask anyone who went out in Hull in the 90s where the night ended up and you’ll get one answer more than any other: LA's. Lexington Avenue, on Ferensway — neon out front, a dancefloor the size of a small county, and absolutely everyone you knew somewhere inside it.

A 1990s Hull night out

The place to be

LA’s ran from 1986 right through to 2005, and for most of the 90s it was Hull’s big night out. Three rooms — one massive main room downstairs, an R&B room, and a 70s room where everyone seemed to end up meeting — a late 2am licence, and the Luckies bar upstairs for when you needed five minutes and a sit down.

Bus Stop on a Tuesday

And then there was Bus Stop. A Tuesday night — a Tuesday — pulling in over 2,000 people. Genuinely one of the best nights this city has ever put on, on the day of the week nobody’s supposed to go out. If you queued round the block on a wet Tuesday for it, you already know.

(And yes — a little group called Take That played LA’s back in 1992, before they were, you know, Take That.)

Gone, but not for good

LA’s finally closed in 2005, but it never really left — Hull still talks about it, and there have even been 90s throwback revival nights trying to bottle a bit of that lightning again. You can get close. You can’t quite get back the walk home with a tray of chips at 3am.

So we did the next best thing and put the LA’s look — that hot-pink neon script and the cyan oval — on a tee and a hoodie, for everyone who was there.
